VA Can SurpriseNovember 2003 By Larry The VA system has really been under attack for years. I often wonder when I go over to Loma Linda, California how the people there can get the job done. I do not by any means claim that the system is perfect. The VA has major problems. However, in any large organization- if you are lucky- you’ll get some great people to help you. It always was the individual that significantly improves the group. I will mention three. My first experience in the dental clinic was a typical government experience. My dentist was leaving going to another VA hospital and really was not into this- fixing teeth thing. I was simply in a situation where -I would have to wait until this non- productive person left and was replaced. I remember the first time I met -Dr. Theresa Cutler -who is a diamond in the rough. She was such an improvement over the robotic dentist -that I was very surprised. This dentist is a professional communicator who has done a great job on my teeth. This person has significantly improved the clinic and is a- can do- positive force with VA. Cutler is a glass half full. Mr. Primary doctor is Dr. Aiyar -who always surprises me with her patience. They (VA), opened a clinic in my town, but I have been seeing this doctor for years and drive the 40 miles so that she can see me. Dr. Aiyar has always had time to work with me. I am always impressed with her ability to focus just on me. We have developed a strong relationship I was there a couple of days ago and once again I was impressed. This individual has impressive skills and certainly improves the entire Module 3 crew. I would not tell you that I am getting perfect care. However, it’s the doctor that makes the difference. Anyone who is lucky enough to have her is well ahead of the game. I received a call about 2 months ago concerning a heart study and was asked to join the study. Ten (10) years ago -I had a five way bypass. I am fully retired now so my heart is a very high priority. I met this totally professional RN named Vicki Simpson who works in Cardiology and is the research nurse coordinator. I was not feeling good and they took an EKG which was abnormal. She knew what to do. She called the doctor and got me some treatment. This was pretty scary as I sat there with my chest pounding. but Vicki Simpson had her eye on me and I felt some comfort there. There are of course other examples. These three people contribute a lot to the Loma Linda, California VA Hospital. I for one appreciate the effort that these three make daily that allows them to circumvent the system. ~ Larry |
