Pets and The Military

It’s Travel Time – And Time For A Tip!!

Traveling with pets???? A lot of you sure are! Over half of the questions submitted to this Pets Page involve travel issues. From PCSing to visiting family members, inquiring minds want to know the best, fastest cheapest way to take their pets along for the ride.

And now there is help!!!

There is a really fun and helpful website called – you’ll love this – Petswelcome.com

If you have a pet and are planning any kind of trip – or think you might in the future – visit this site. It contains a plethora of information regarding places to go and fun things to do with your pet. Now a family vacation can include the entire family! They have a “Search by Route” section where you enter your start and end points and it will map out the route, listing all the pet-friendly hotels along the way. Chats are available on all sorts of topics. They have a database of pet sitters for your viewing. Everything is listed by state – or country. They have compiled an impressive listing of pet-friendly everythings! Hot just hotels – they have listings for museums, cafes, malls, campgrounds, stores, beaches, kennels, amusement parks, bed & breakfasts, vacation rentals, cabins and cottages. Even apartments and rentals! Petswelcome.com even has special listings for those of us with larger dogs and a cats-only link. Check it out!

Of course, as with anything involving your pets and family, you will need to check out the pet sitters, hotels, kennels, etc and make sure these are the folks you want to look after Fido and Muffy while you are in that area. But what a wonderful resource – a great starting point - to get some much needed information without having to beg someone at your new destination to photocopy the “Pets” page from the phone book! (What, you’ve never had to do that?)

They have a section dedicated to actual travel – travel tips, what to do in emergency, emergency vet listings. They also have information on air travel with major airline carrier pet policies for both domestic and international travel.

PCSing must be in the air, as your requests for travel information are coming in more frequently. Here are more resources for finding pet-friendly travel places and tips:

Books:

Websites:

Hotels: (please be aware that individual hotels may vary, but these are chains that I know have accepted pets on occasion – you will have to check for the one in your area)

Best Western, Econolodge, Holiday Inn Express, Motel 6, Microtel

Other Resources:

  • AAA (their tour books indicate which hotels accept pets, but only AAA hotels are listed)
  • Your post housing office usually has temporary lodging listings
  • Your unit sponsor
