New DoD Adoption Leave PolicyPublic Law 109-163, the FY 2006 National Defense Authorization Act, authorizes non-chargeable leave for service members adopting a child on or after 1 January 2006. The Department of Defense (DoD) established procedures to implement changes to leave eligibility for service members in the process of adopting a child. Sec. 593 allows a member of the Armed Forces up to 21 days of leave in a calendar year in connection with the adoption of a child, as long as the member is eligible for DOD reimbursement of qualified adoption expenses.
